"La Mancha" is the name of this panel. I started just over a year ago to make pieces of spare simplicity. "Six elements or less" was my charge as though the confines of a sonnet could liberate some other forces in the work. I have been doing panels full of fireworks and busy optical tricks for years and suddenly found an intrigue with the emptiness that so few brushstrokes generated, I did a panel called "the Unknown" which sold instantly and then "Strange," and then a piece called "Summer Alone" which had this palpable melancholy hovering within. Boom. New feel. A figure on a beach, hot sun, quiet, waves distant...

Here we find the Don in his helmet with a spear. His landscape shifted, off kilter, his Spanish hot sun, whirling, the windmill of his misunderstood reality transformed... I grew up in a house with a sculpture of Don Quixote in the living room and the icon follows me and appears regularly. My father the professor went off tilting in his late years, brain dimmed, eyes bright, then old. A soldier with his lance and history unraveling...
